The Story Behind
The Homestead Guru
In 2010, Catherine Bleish had a radical vision: a blog and YouTube channel that merged the practicality of *Martha Stewart Living* with the grit of *Sovereign Living*. She wanted to teach people the real tools of self-sufficiency—like how to slaughter a chicken, give birth at home, and raise a child without a social security number.
That original concept evolved into a docu-reality series following her first attempt at homesteading alongside her ex-husband. Because the show was produced by a nonprofit, their legal team recommended Catherine launch her blog under a separate URL—and that’s how *The Homestead Guru* was born in 2013.
Over time, Catherine realized it shouldn’t just be her voice featured, but a chorus of others walking similar paths. *The Homestead Guru* became a collective—a space where fellow freedom-seekers, off-gridders, and homesteaders could share their knowledge, experiences, and inspiration.
Now over a decade strong and home to nearly 700 articles, *The Homestead Guru* continues to grow as a trusted resource for anyone learning to be their own homesteading guru.

Or, divide it up into 2 living spaces and the greenhouse at 500sf… Read more »
